I love new toys! We just got new nooks from barnes and noble! We are
all travelling a lot this next year and decided it was time. While we
thought about getting one last year, we opted to wait until the ipad
came out to really make a choice. We went with the nook. Mostly
because it had all the features we need and you can do quite a bit
with it within the barnes and noble stores. Plus! They have coupons
on there for free stuff like coffee and you can read books for free in
the store for an hour. So fun!

I learned my lesson last year on our honeymoon in my quest to pack
lite (which I traditionally do, but in the chaos that was the wedding,
I kind of forgot a few things). I forgot to bring some books. So
there we were on the beautiful beaches of Mexico with nothing to do
but lay around. And those of you that know me know that this is not
usually possible for me. I can't just *sit still* for hours on end
with nothing to do. Sean is perfectly capable; me--not so much. So
every 10 minutes I was suggesting that we move from the beach to the
pool to the other pool to the lazy river to the beach to the pool to
eat to the pool to the.....you get the idea. I think Sean was about to
kill me after about a day. Maybe that's why it was so easy to convice
him that we needed to go on some tours....

Needless to say, I needed one of these so that I can compactly bring
some entertainment along with me. Sean was thrilled with the idea. And
he is excited we will have it for our trip this fall so that I can,
you know, light someplace for a while.

One of the first books I downloaded was a book called "Sh*t my dad
says." And. Oh. My. Gosh. This is by far the funniest and most
entertaining book I have ever read. You MUST read it. And not just
cause the dude grew up in San Diego. It is just that funny. Super fast
read, but one that I could read over and over again if I ever need a
good laugh.

Sean and I were in hysterics last night.

Go buy it. And a nook. You'll be glad you did.

Looking through pictures this weekend, I found these photos of my dad
that I had never seen before. I absolutely love these!

Photos for me are little treasures. Little moments in time that have
captured life as it happens.... Life that happens in the blink of an
eye.

I love that no matter how much time goes by, photos are inherently the
same. While I love the photos that exhibit more artistry, I so love
the simplcity of these photos--it's amazing how they stand the test of
time.

so spring is officially here, Easter is over, and summer is just around the corner. i find myself taking a little time to relax before the busy summer season hits and begin to think about how life is flowing by in the blink of an eye.

i don't have kids yet, but i can't even imagine how crazy life will become when we do. as i read blogs that i follow, specifically my cousin's, it amazes me how old her kids are getting and i wonder how hard it is to stop, slow down and just enjoy the little fleeting moments. i know how hard it is in my life right now....

i have a hard time sitting still, always so many things to do and projects to complete. we are all running in a zillion different directions. how in the world do people do it all and work full time and keep up with their kids AND take time to enjoy all of the little moments in life without worrying about all of the stuff they have to do?

so, over the last few weeks, i have started taking time for myself again. to just sit, meditate, look around, watch, listen, and really try to enjoy the small moments in my life. starting in the morning with 30 minutes of quiet time for myself, recapturing my hobbies, and just being. it has done wonders for my frame of mind when i do and makes my days at work and my dealings with people more palatable.

i encourage you to stop, look around, be thankful for what you have, and really live in the moment.

Spring is here!

So, spring is here and it's time to plant my latest crops. This year I
opted for fewer veggies, hoping for a larger harvest.

This year's crops are only tomatoes, strawberries, and cucumbers. I
also planted an assortment of herbs as well-basil, thyme, dill,
parsley, cilantro, chives, and oregano. I LOVE making food with fresh
herbs! So excited to see how everything turns out.

Last year, I got about 5 green beans, 10 cucs, and 0 zuchinni. I
think the zuchinni needed a deeper pot, and I had a giant worm attack
that ate ALL of the leaves on my bean plants. The cucs did the best.
I'm banking on that again this year and hoping for a large crop of
strawberries. Yum!

If Sean gets time, he's going to build me another planter box that is
a bit deeper. Hopefully I can grow a few bigger things in that one. I
would like to try a squash again. Beans are out-those are too big for
my little yard, and the amount of beans you get out of one plant
hardly seems worth the work. A plot of land would make that easier.

So this weekend was redoing the yard and getting it ready for spring
and summer. I have missed the beautiful warm weather! I sat outside
most of the day today. Wish i had ONE more day off.

nonetheless, i'm determined to get back into blogging again. not that i was all down and dirty into it anyway, but i am more focused on trying to keep up with it now.

it's interesting how life takes many twists and turns. sometimes it seems that life's richest experiences are not the ones that we plan for, but the ones that come at us sideways when we least expect it.

for me, this happened almost 7 years ago now when i met sean and then again, almost 4 years ago when we started our business. both were unexpected and both have enriched my life tenfold. and, recently another opportunity is staring me in the face. it's amazing what happens when we slow down, look for opportunities, take risks. i would have missed it.

....if it all just happened overnight, we wouldn't know how much it means........ Here's to continuing on my daily journey of taking time to be quiet, slowing down my pace, and enjoying the many blessings that are given to us each day.

Almost one year later...

It's hard to believe that we have been married for almost a year already. It has flown by so fast. We spent the year getting settled in, working hard, and reclaiming our lives. This year I have reclaimed my photography hobby. I have had the opportunity and privilege to get to take photos of some pretty neat families over the last year. 3 months has come and gone in a flash. time sure flies around here, especially in the summer. work is so busy this time of year, but this year seems especially busy. I think it's because we are still growing, so we are bigger this year than last, and there are bound to be more problems associated with the growth.

I'm definitely not complaining though. i am very thankful and feel very blessed to be where we are today. still the best decision we have ever made, no matter how stressful it is.

i'm going to attempt to keep up with another blog over here. i know i'm not very good at this one, but i'm going to try to be better about keeping up with both. you can also access everything through my website at www.kaylamorris.com.

The car sickness is setting in. I guess it's probably not a good thing for me to be typing in this condition. it's bound to make it worse.

usually a four hour ride from Vegas has turned into a 6 hour ordeal. it was more or less bumper to bumper from Vegas to the checkpoint just outside of Barstow. 107 degrees. must be why there is at least 1 car every half a mile that was pulled over with some sort of mechanical failure. even a cop was on the side of the road changing a tire. in his uniform. with a bullet proof vest. in this heat. reason number 453 to thank our law enforcement officers.....and why i am not a cop. i prefer my office.

glad to be heading home. i hate vegas for many reasons. well, it's probably mostly just the strip. the reason biggest being the cigarette smoke. then the casino floor. we stayed at THE hotel (at madalay bay) this time. i have to admit that is was infinitely more relaxing that the other hotels that i have been to there. there is no smoking and there is no gambling. if i return to vegas, that is where i would stay again. I usually only go there for conventions....so it's not usually relaxing anyway.

wow. shocker. more traffic through victorville. this stop ad go stuff makes it worse for me. guess i'll have to sign off now before everyone in the car starts suffering. :)

okay. it's been a while since i last blogged. it's been a long year of planning, creating, and doing, all culminating into the big day.....the wedding day.

everyone told me to take time to stop and enjoy it. look around and take it all in. and, I did, but i feel like i didn't do it for long enough. it was all such a whirlwind of running from here to there taking photos, greeting people, giving speeches......it's actually hard to believe the day is over. anticlimactic in some ways.

Sean's face was so priceless. one of the many things i will remember about the day.

We've now settled into married life. not much different from our prevous "lives." but, i guess that is what happens when you have dated for six years. the one thing that is the weirdest is the words husband and wife. i avoided the word fiance for a year and a half....and now i feel like i am choking out the word husband. weird. i am sure a year from now i will be thinking....that was so lame.

honeymoon was awesome. didn't want to come home for sure! we had so many adventures, and even after six years, grew a little deeper in love.

and, now, one month later it seems like a whirlwind of a year and a half of my life. and, my only regret is that i didn't take a few more photos of the process along the way.

not bad. and happy to have my life back.

Good Lord Is Almost Thanksgiving

Life is flying by at warp speed these days. It's so hard to believe that we are so close to Christmas and only six months until the wedding! yikes! There seems that there is so much to do everyday with wedding planning, keeping the business on track during these economic times, and keeping my personal life under control--without letting my business life take over.

I was forced to slow it down this last week and weekend...it's amazing what sickness does to you. During my time in quarantine, I sat down and got my life organized. I have always considered myself organized. I like order, making sure everything has a home and returns to that place at the end of the day so that it doesn't start taking over. Cleanliness is a must or I get irritable. And, at work, I have always been fairly organized, but the demands of this job, keep you from being able to focus on any one task for longer than about 5 minutes. And, if you can't get it done in those 5 minutes, well, you better hope you remember to come back to it! But, I never feel like I get ahead of the game. It used to be that the business would slow down in the winter so that we can get caught up on projects, but now, since we are in constant growth mode, there is no more slow. Ever.

I have always looked at friends ad colleagues in the industry that seemed to have their whole lives planned out on a calendar, right down to bedtime, like they were crazy--or hyper-organized. Yeah, now I know why. You get to the point sometimes where you get so overwhelmed with things that are going on and easily sidetracked by being pulled in 90 different directions, that it feels like NOTHING ever gets done. So, here I am today, with my calendar before me, that is chock full to the minute of times when certain tasks will be done--everyday. Thank goodness this business is slightly repetitive every month. And, barring the emergencies, from now on, it is probably just going to have to wait until its scheduled time.

Couch Potato to 5k

Week two finished up with a bit longer run. Feeling much stronger this week and still loving it! I am much faster than I originally anticipated being at this stage.

This week we had 90 second running intervals between each walk. It's amazing how many more calories you burn by doing the walking/running thing. this week will probably be 120 second intervals.

In case anyone is interested in taking the challenge, I downloaded the podcast off of itunes. It is the podcast called "podcasts for running." It is so mindless--he tells you when to start and stop running and gives great encouragement along the way. He also does a great job with the music. Very upbeat dance music that keeps ya moving.

I really love the fact that I don't have to worry about whether or not I will make it to the gym or not. If we are running late....just get dressed and head out.

At some point in the near future, once work slows a little more, I will get back to going to the gym in the evenings on the way home on the alternating days, but for now, this is working out great!

Yesterday was our first company picnic. Last year, we didn't have enough employees to warrant a get together. It really would have just been Kendra, mom and me. Not as much fun, especially since we see each other every day as it is. :)

We had over 30 people schedule to attend, but we ended up having 29 show up. A great turn out for only two years in business! We had a great time playing monster kick ball. This HUGE ball made it much more competitive so that the guys weren't able to cream it. And, we had enough food to feed an army! (as usual). We way over bought the food because we are always so concerned about running out of food. yeah. never happens.

Right after the pot luck, we rushed back to Sean's for a birthday dinner for his mom. Man, his sister can cook!! food was awesome! filet mignon with crab and asparagus, spinach salad, and potato. mmmmmm

All in all, it was a great day. Will post pics later.

Last week I embarked on a new journey. Running. Traditionally, I have despised running. Hated it so much I would avoid it. Oddly enough, I love it now. I can't wait to run. There is something about it right now that makes is so great. Kind of like I get to just run away from it all....it is really freeing. Just me and the road. Nothing to think about but what is in front of me.

This week begins week 2. I haven't looked at what is in store, I may change my mind as soon as I start running this week.:) This program is great, though. It is meant to ease you into running so that your body doesn't freak out.

So, far--Great! Next week, I may have a different view if it goes too fast!

As usual, we had great intentions to take several trips this summer, but it seems that we are getting in the way of ourselves again with work, and....uh.... work. With Sean working every other weekend, and our busy season being summer, it's hard to get away.

Worked today, then to little BBQ with the fam. Gary's parents are in town at the moment, so we introduced them to some of our family. I still feel terrible. The sore throat is gone and has been replaced by a headache, sneezing, and stuffy nose. Ack! so irritating! Can't really enjoy my 4th cause I am so tired. At least this last week was a 2.5 day work week for me.

Summer is in full swing now and work is CRAZY! It's hard to believe that the year is over half over and Sean and I have been engaged for five months. Less than a year to the big day....It's all going to go by so fast, I have to conciously remember that I need to take time to appreciate it all.

Now I am home with Sean sitting on the couch relaxing. Tomorrow, we are up for lounging around. Then Sunday, a little golfing (if I can breathe) and then maybe the zoo.

I am ready to totally relax!

I love my mom's cabin. it's so peaceful and is such a great place to recharge. i forget how much i love it until i am here again. i feel that i all can do when i am here is sleep. there is no noise outside, no sirens, no traffic noise, no noisy neighbors.....just peace and quiet. the sound of birds chirping during the day, and the sound of the wind rustling through the enormous pine trees at night. just total peace.

I always forget to bring a hammock when I come. there is nothing better than gently swinging in the breeze listing to the sound of the wind....and then drifting to sleep.

it has been a somewhat sad trip this time, though. Idyllwild used to be a bustling little tourist community over the last five years, but i guess with the price of gas, declining real estate, this little community is slowly becoming a ghost town. buildings are empty, streets have few people in them. it's sad to see this change. this is a great little artist community and a beautiful town.

if anyone needs a great place to take a little vacation and get away from it all, idyllwild is a great place to go. it is not commercialized at all. no chain stores. no franchises. just honest people making a living in their quaint little stores and restaurants.

as vacation time rolls around this year, remember to support your local owners. we did our part today. it was really sad to see them so wiling to negotiate just to make a sale. i, just like everyone else, like a bargain, but not at the expense of someone else's lively hood.

Okay. The engagement party is over which means that all of the work to mom's house is over too. I am engaged to a wonderful man. I have a wonderful, supportive family. I am healthy again. Business is moving along steadily. People in our business are being removed from our lives. How much happier can I be? Oh yeah!

SO happy it's Friday! More painting in store for me this weekend. Mom is doing a facelift on her house before the engagement party on the 26th. So, I am up to my eyeballs in paint. Kendra gets reprieve this weekend because she has some dancing thing she already paid for. She got a full weekend in last weekend though, heh! Hopefully this will be mostly the end of it this weekend. Then it's on to the other projects mom has lined up. Installing a new mailbox, new door, lights.... The list never seems to end~ I am not sure how the current post on mom's mailbox is still upright. This woman has been living with this thing like this for years! It won't even nail on to the post anymore. Se everyday, she stops at the end of the driveway and puts a the box back on the post after the mailman has knocked it off putting junk mail in. We have had a PO BOX for several years now, so she doesn't really receive much mail anymore. But she still get the junk mail plus a few other tidbits and the thing is still is on the ground everyday! The wood has been eaten so much by termites that it is completely hollow.

So, this week, she finally gets a new one and hopefully a thank you letter from the mailman :)

This is getting to be old. I am ready for this stupid thing to be finished! The steroids are s.l.o.w.l.y helping, but i only have two days left of them and am hoping this thing is done by then. If not, I guess I'll be back at the urgent care again.

On the bright side, at least I have gotten a little forced vacation...although not my idea of a great time.

I have been home all week with a very bad allergic reaction...eh...to myself. It all started in 4th grade when apparently, I got so stressed out from this teacher I had that I left school a month early to deal with hives. And, I have learned over the years that they apparently never go away. In periods of stress, I get them again. It's just, usually, I only get them around my joints, below my lip, or on my stomach. Well, this time, I must have been freakin' stressed out because I got them on my face and down my neck. It was oh so attractive. They got so out of control that I am now on steroids. But, I have decided to make the most of it and start working out in hopes that I will quickly bulk up and look like a champion body builder.

An engagement....

Being engaged is a very weird and surreal experience I have decided. I still have a hard time referring to Sean as my..ehem...fiance. Sounds weird. Thankfully he is having the same problem, so we have just resorted to calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend for now. It will be even weirder to use the word husband. ack!

This wedding business is such a racket! I, of course, have started doing a little planning by at least booking a venue to have the thing at. Things get filled so fast! In looking around at all of the things to buy, it amazes me how much people spend on weddings! The venues alone are outrageous! It's crazy! I am desperately trying to keep the costs down because it kills me to spend that much money on one day when it could be used to invest in something...anything tangible! I have decided to wear my mom's wedding dress, which will not only save a ton of money, but it will make it all the more special. Thank goodness she picked a very classic style that is still nice for today. I tried it on a couple of weeks ago and left her house smelling like formaldehyde. ick! Had to shower after that one. She had had the dress "preserved" so to speak in this box. It was actually still white and not discolored at all....and the seams still were intact. bonus! I think I am still going to have them looked at to verify their integrity. I don't want another incident like the one I had at the Mark of Excellence awards. (my beautiful vintage dress that I bought still had the original beautiful vintage thread holding the thing together that all popped loose during the ceremony. Let's just say the entire thing self destructed before my very eyes. It wasn't a pretty sight. And neither was the jean shirt I was forced to wear over it the rest of the night!)

So we have pretty much settled on a date. May 22, 2009. It will be exactly six years from our first date. It is kind of weird trying to actually pick a date. There is no real significance to any one date, and if you are trying to make it meaningful, what date do you choose? One of my friends just picked a date because it "felt like a special date." Nothing really came to me other than the 22nd of May. So, it is a Friday night, but will be great anyway because (a) hopefully things will be cheaper and (b) I will be able to have an evening wedding.

It still amazes me how many people pay attention to these types of things. I didn't even have to tell anyone that we were engaged...most everyone just ran up to me screaming. "Is this new?!" "When did it happen?!" and "It's about time!" Mostly the latter. With my favorite being "It's about bloody time!" In some ways it seems like forever and in other ways it has flown by. I can't believe we have been together that long. All that dreaming and planning we have done is finally here. It's very surreal.

Today was a GREAT day! We went for a tour around the bay on segway scooters! I totally felt like a tourist. Camera around neck and all! We had a blast though. Photos up on Flickr for those that are interested.

We only had one really close call today with injuries. One of the women in our group was poking up a hill and was following the scooter to close in front of her and WHAMO! onto the ground she flew! Helmet flew off....it was quite a sight! I was worried that she hit her head harder than she did. And, because she didn't have her helmet strapped on, it flew off the second she hit the ground. I knew something was up when I heard the squeal of tires. I turned around to see her do this weird half twisty thing off of the scooter onto her side and then to the pavement.

Then, not to be outdone, after about two and a half hours of riding ALL over the PB area, Rita zoomed back into the scooter store and came to a stop inside....then totally forgot how to dismount the thing and ended up doing a faceplant into the carpet. I haven't laughed that hard in a while. After I asked if she was okay, of course. really!

He zipped up and finished his shopping, and remembering what the cashier had told him, finally understood. He then intentionally got in the line to check out where the lady was that told him about his "barracks door."

He was planning to have a little fun with her. When he reached her counter he said, "When you saw my barracks door open did you see a soldier standing in there at attention?" The lady thought for a moment and said, "No, no I didn't. All I saw was a disabled veteran sitting on two duffel bags."

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. Ho wever, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regula rly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...

its been so long since i posted anything that my auto post has disabled.

I can't believe it's christmas! what have we been up to?

1. taking over new properties. we are in the process of doubling in size (yay). but with that yay comes a ton of work, especially growing so much! so, we have been working until 1, 2 am almost every night trying to get this transition to go smoothly. i swear i am only running on adrenaline at this point...and i'm not sure i have much left. i feel like i am running around in a fog trying to accomplish as much as humanly possible, without killing myself... or those around me.

Okay. the above was started a week ago, and I am just now getting to finishing it up. that's sad. i am not sure what #2 was going to be, or what the point of my original post was, so i might as well catch up on what's been going on here.

we had some pretty fun events lately, namely MOE (the awards for our industry). photo above from that night. It's great to dress up and have a nice night out and just kick it.

i have also been enjoying Bentley.... He is constantly keeping me on my toes...he is oh so cute!

working, as stated above.

I just started working out again and joined Curves. normally, i am out and about golfing, etc., but with the winter setting in, it is too cold to golf or hike like i was. so, i joined the gym and have been faithfully going at least three times a week. I am very proud of myself...mostly because i get up at 5:30 every day to go. and, that is an accomplishment for me!

we enjoyed our holiday. it was so relaxing! we took monday and today off and just kicked back and enjoyed a little down time. this next week is going to be stressful before the 1st, so this little time off has been great!

i got some great stuff for Christmas...my most favorite being some stack diamond rings from my grandmother. i have been coveting them for years...and she just up and gave them to me! i was shocked, yet thrilled! I also got a plane ticket so that i can visit my friend in texas from my mom, misc camera stuff, more jewelry, Bose headphones (since I lost my nice pair on the way to my dad's funeral in July--we were in a rush and i left them on the plane), and tonight sean and i exchange gifts. should be interesting to see what he will be getting me this year. thus far, the last 4 years have been a success!

Looking back....

This year was very bitter sweet for us as i look back. we have enjoyed success with our business, and sadness personally with the passing of my father. however, as i reflect on the year, we have been continually blessed in so many ways, and i am very grateful everyday for the path i have chosen. And, while there are so many questions left unanswered with the passing of my father, i am truly grateful for the times we had with him and the blessing that he was in our lives. i am grateful for what has been, what is now, and what is yet to come in my life......

Here's to a great 2008! Happy (early) New Year, and a (belated) Merry Christmas!

here comes santa claus, here comes santa claus.... Today marks the official kick-off of the Christmas season! I am very excited, although I can't believe that it is here again already. I'm pretty much done with my shopping, with only a few presents left to buy. I know I'm anal, but I don't like fighting crowds, so I start shopping about September 1.

We had a nice Thanksgiving yesterday....very low key. It was nice to just stay around town and not have to drive anywhere this year. Granted, my family doesn't live that far away, but 30 minutes, late at night, when you are tired from eating all of the turkey n stuff, it's nice to be only about 5 minutes away. We went to Sean's mom's house this year. It was so funny! His Aunt was trying to have a memorable little toast where everyone said what they were thankful for...however, I had the giggles yesterday, and Sean's sister kept making me laugh. Everyone was making up funny things they were thankful for...thus making me laugh even more. It was great!

So, off we go tomorrow to shop for our tree. I'm excited about decorating my house this year! I have quite a few new decorations that I got last year on sale, and using them in my new house will be fun!

Kendra just got back today from Illinois, visiting Gary's family. I watched Kalvin for the week and he discovered that he can get up on the chair and reach my cereal...and eat it....twice. So, he was in his crate several times this week. pill.

Last weekend it was chilly enough to try out my new fireplace in my condo. Now, I have never used gas before, just a regular fireplace...and boy can I make a mean fire from wood. So, I asked Sean if he would light it, but he was engrossed in a game of poker on the computer with Gary, and Kendra had her nose buried in her computer watching some new movie she had downloaded. And, I don't know if you know these people when they are engrossed in something, but they rarely look up, much less acknowledge you when you address them. So, here I am, standing in the middle of the living room with 3 people staring at their computers when I ask Sean if he would do it. Without looking up, he said, "Nah, you go ahead and try it." I reminded him I had no idea what to do, so his brief explanation of "just turn on the gas and light it," followed. OOookay... So i turned in on...high. And, I didn't know how much gas would escape as I turned it on...high. And, unfortunately for me, the lighter wouldn't light right away. Do you see where this is going?

Well, so I am sitting there clicking the lighter as gas is spewing into the living room and I think to myself, "I wonder how much gas has come out?" But, decide to forge ahead. I click again a couple more times and then WHOOOOSH! Flames fly out of the fireplace and up the wall, burning off some of my hair in the process. I look up to see everyone staring at me with their mouths hanging open and Gary says, "those were really big flames..." Then, Sean sticks his little nose in the air and takes a few whiffs in the air. "It smells like burnt hair in here." My hand flies to my forehead to feel crispy hair. Do you think they are paying attention to me now? Kendra looks back at her movie and mumbles something a about flamage and burned hair and calmly goes back to watching her movie.

Do these people realize I almost killed myself!??! I run to the bathroom and see that my little hairs on the front of my hair are completely singed off and all that remains are little stubs of burnt hair. ew. I come back in the room to see Sean demonstrating to everyone how big the flames were, pointing at the wall where they rose to.

He looks over at me in disbelief and I remind him that maybe next time he should just take over for me and trust me when I say I have no idea what I am doing.

What a lazy day. the weather was overcast for most of the day, and it really didn't get that warm. it's definitely turning into winter, well at least as much winter as we get here in these parts.

we have a resident on this property that we just took over that has not paid rent in a year. IN A YEAR PEOPLE! she owes over $10,000 in back rent, AND has the gaul to tell us that she is thinking about staying. uh. no you're not. you're moving.

not once has this woman even attempted to pay rent, just lie and cover it up. so amazing. it's one thing if you make an attempt to pay your rent and can prove that you are working to try to resolve the problem, but it's another to continually tell someone that the check is in the mail. she can't possibly think that we believe that now can she? i guess it's worked in the past with the old property management company...but really! i hate liars.

I finally had time to clean, i mean really clean my condo this weekend. i even had kendra here cleaning while gary was in vegas. such a sense of satisfaction. i think we swept out a pile of ash from the garage large enough to fill a paint can, and add in the leaves and you got yourself a party! the house was not as bad since we had it closed up during the fires, but the garage was another story. next up, carpet cleaning.

What a bummer the charger and indy games were today... although i'm sure jeremy is happy. i did pick the pats in my football pool though, but was rooting for the colts. i'm not really a fan of tome brady...kinda seems like a chump.

the time change didn't seem to affect me all that much, nor did it seem to help with my sleepiness. i just basically woke up earlier. i did buy bently a santa suit this weekend..SO funny! kalvin pretty much just grabs the hood and pulls bently around the house with it. need to ensure that it lasts until christmas without them tearing it up.

...oh yeah, it's because it all blew out over the ocean towards orange county. and is now blowing back in over orange county.

as a regular authority on fires around here, as this is our fourth evacuation, i decided to document the incident on camera this time as much as time allowed. so, here are some of the photos that I took over the hours, from the wind blowing at the outset, to the smoke rolling in, to minutes before my mom was officially kicked out of her home as the fires crested over the hill toward her. they are not super great since i had to take them from inside of the car due to the smoke and ash...but you get the point.

i have tried to tell sean (this is his first fire) that there is no fear like the fear of a fast approaching fire. the most scared i have ever been in my life was the very first time that we had a fire, shortly after we moved here. i was in seventh grade and home alone for part of the time. my mom arrived home and we began gathering a few things up (i had gotten the pictures gathered up but that was it). then, in the blink of an eye, as my mom is talking to my hysterical sister about the few things she can't live without, the fire turned and it was across the street. in total chaos and panic, with police yelling into our home and threatening to arrest us, i screamed to my mom that we need to leave. we heave the animals into the car, grab some dirty clothes (really random i know), forget the pictures and things we have packed, and head down the hill--bird seed, bird poop, and feathers flying all over the car from when i threw the bird cage into the car on its side--cat hissing--dog barking. we drive through the flames, passed police car after police car, fire truck after fire truck, throwing water onto the flames so that we can get out safely. scariest day of my life.

knowing what i know now, we were so lucky our car didn't stall, the firefighters were there, or worse. now a days, it seems that no matter how much we prepare, they can't seem to get a handle on them. the reverse 911 system is great-for those that have a landline anyway. kendra and i dont, so we didn't get our call (we were prepared anyway though). the news seemed to be reporting on every other area but ours and we had no idea where the fire line was at any given moment. it was total chaos. all that being said, they have learned valuable lessons from earlier fires by getting people out hours in advance so that they have time to get out without too much smoke or flames and everyone has time to get through the horrible traffic jams. many people spent hours in traffic before they got out. the evacuation centers were awesome with eveything anyone could need and more--except for the own home of course--including massages, free concerts, great food. They really did that right.

since the first fire, i have wised up and insist (as does mom) in getting packed at the first hint of a fire. for some reason she is in this weird area that acts like a wind tunnel and sucks the flames up the side of the mountain where she lives E.V.E.R.Y. time. --tired of it--

my mom has finally decided to think about moving....i know i am tired of schleping all of her stuff in and out all the time, the stress, the worry....now we wait for the real estate market to recover.

let's hope this is it for a while and we can get her moved before the next one hits. four times safe. how much more luck could there be?

Summer is supposed to be over...but the heat apparently missed the memo. It was HOT here this weekend. We spent the long weekend by the bay, where it was a mere 88 degrees. But for those of you anywhere else....it was air conditioner weather. We got back home today and I cranked on the a/c. All of my lip balm melted in my car while I was gone and is stuck in the cap. heh

We had a great time sailing and relaxing. It's amazing that it wasn't more packed...not that there wasn't a lot of people, but it seemed slower than last year.

This was Bentley's first camping trip..what a trouper! He was great! He went in the water, (with life jacket of course!) and had a great time barking at the waves. He's officially a salty dog...went for a great sail too! Has his sea legs now....He was so tired at the end of the day that he didn't make a peep! He sure is starting to really mellow out and become the best dog.

It's 8pm and I'm still at work. Why? Oh, let's see, could it be the series of residents that have nothing better to do than to call and harrass me about why, why they ask, aren't you fixing my tub!??! I demand it to be fixed today! You guys are horrible! What?? No you do not have permission to enter!! No! You may not come in...yes I demand that you fix my tub today do you hear me??!!??

This is a more dangerous business than people realize. Do you realize how many psychotic people there are out there? People that will shoot you because they can hear a toilet lid closing upstairs?? One of my colleagues in the industry in Idaho was shot and killed last week by a resident that also took her own life because she could not deal with the sounds around her apartment. Now, let's think about this...I can hear the toilet lid closing at my mom's house.....let alone an apartment complex with a bazillion other apartments around you.

Today I dealt with someone who was demanding one thing but not allowing me to do what I needed to do to take care of it...what if that person is psychotic?? What if they want to shoot me cause they can only take a shower and not a bath? How important is that bath to them?? Oy. The drama.

I have another one for the book though.... Yesterday we served a notice to a woman who had a pit bull on the property. And, after a series of heated exchanges between them and L, I waited by the front gate for them to leave. And as I was sitting there leaning against the gate (mind you I was minding my own business and had not been involved in the conversations), they turned to me and asked me if I was going to stand there. Appears that way, I said. And, the younger of the two turned to me and said, I hope you get sunburned....in the nastest tone you could ever imagine. What? That's it? That's the best you can do? Wish a sunburn on me? Sold! I'll take that any day over, oh let's see.... "kill you" "maim you" "sue you" et all.

Holy crap, it's hot! It is (supposed to be) the hottest day of the week...however, we all know how our weather people are around here. Hot, sticky, humid, and icky! I need a shower again.

Today has been a good day. We came to work this week after working hard on the office all weekend working on the landscaping and rearranging the office. I can sense the jealousy! It is nice to come to work with new organization and feeling like you can get something accomplished. It's the little things that matter!

We completely weeded the entire front yard of 50 years worth of weeds and roots all jam packed into one tiny area so packed full that it took gary jumping up and down on the pitchfork to release these little basketball-size, root-ball devils. I spent the entire day, apparently, hunched over with my shirt pulled away from the top of my pants exposing a sliver of my skin so that the slicver of my white back is now the color of tomatoes from baking in the sun the entire day. No one alerted me to this fact. Even my skin cancer crazy mother who is always saying "Do you have sun screen on? Cause you're going to get cancer if you're not careful!" All those that know me can attest to my white skin and the burn rate. They didn't call me "moon burn" for nothin during high school!

It's raining dogs here. K and I just had Keely (mom's dog) over for the last week and a half while my mom was out of town, and now I have Chloe, the Gleicher's dog, for the next two weeks, minus a few days when another lady is taking her. So, at work, we have Kalvin, Keely, Bentley, Chloe, and Sasha (an employee's dog). I feel like the dog whisperer....breaking up dog fights, taking them for walks, making them mind..... I need a break!

This week is S's b-day party...and my dad's last memorial. Busy week getting ready for both! I am ready for a break and to go camping!
